Artist's Description

A tribute to my ancestors. The Taino were the original inhabitants of the Greater Antilles, including Puerto Rico (Borikén) and Haiti (Ayití). They were the first in the New World to greet European travelers and to meet their violence and disease. A giving and peace-loving people, "Taino" meant "Good people". Despite the horrific genocide imposed on them, their blood and their cultural legacy continues in us, and throughout the world, even if the credit is not often given.

translated inscription:

"We are the invisible slaves,
the hidden footprints,
the good people.
We are the children of Yaya,
of Itiba Cahubaba,
and of the cave Cacibajagua.
We are observers of the world,
providers of the canoe, the cazabe and batey,
artists, explorers, doctors,
mothers, fathers, sons, sisters,
guardians of the Americas.
We are marks embedded in paper,
they write over us but they cannot erase us,
we continue in art and in music,
